High Taxes

When Adrian Dix was a top advisor in government they repeatedly broke promises not to raise taxes – and taxes on B.C. families went through the roof.

After saying they wouldn’t, Adrian Dix and the NDP raised taxes by nearly $2 billion in two years alone – measures that hampered job creation for years to come.

  • They had the highest marginal tax rate in Canada (54.2%) and one of the highest in North America. The BC Liberals have cut personal income taxes by 37% or more, and removed 325,000 lower income citizens from paying any income tax at all.

When the NDP left government:

  • A family of four earning $90,000 paid $5,988 in provincial income tax. Today, the same family pays $3,166 in provincial income tax – a tax cut of 47%.
  • A family of four earning $60,000 a year paid $3,272 in provincial income tax. Today, the same family pays $1,302 in provincial income tax – a 60% tax cut.
  • A family earning $30,000 a year paid $949 in provincial income tax. Today, that family pays NO provincial income tax.

Taxes on Jobs and Business:

  • The NDP introduced the sneaky Corporate Capital Tax as a “temporary measure.” The tax actually discouraged businesses from investing in B.C. and remained in place throughout the 1990s.
  • Under Adrian Dix and the NDP, B.C. had the second highest small business tax in Canada.
